"Chalisa" means "forty" in Hindi, and the Hanuman Chalisa takes its name from its forty main verses (called chaupais), framed by two opening dohas (couplets) and one closing doha: 43 verses in total. It was composed by Goswami Tulsidas, the same poet-saint who wrote the Ramcharitmanas (a retelling of the Ramayana in the Awadhi language), and it praises Hanuman's strength, wisdom, devotion, and lifelong service to Lord Rama.
The hymn is written in Awadhi, a language closely related to Hindi, deliberately chosen by Tulsidas so that ordinary people, not only Sanskrit-trained priests, could recite it and understand its meaning. That choice is a large part of why the Chalisa remains, five centuries later, one of the most widely recited texts in Hinduism: it is short enough to memorize, rhythmic enough to chant, and plain-spoken enough to follow without a scholar's training.

Recited daily by millions of devotees, especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays, days traditionally associated with Hanuman
How long does it take to recite the full Hanuman Chalisa?
A full recitation at a comfortable, unhurried pace takes about 10-15 minutes. Devotees who have memorized it and recite regularly often finish in 8-10 minutes. See our recitation guide for pacing tips.
Can I recite the Hanuman Chalisa in English, or does it have to be in Hindi?
The original Awadhi/Hindi text carries traditional significance, but reciting a translation with sincere devotion is widely accepted. Many teachers encourage devotees to understand the meaning, which is exactly why we show the English meaning next to every verse on this page.
Is there a best time of day to recite the Chalisa?
Early morning (roughly 4-6 AM, called Brahma Muhurta) is traditionally considered the most auspicious time, and Tuesday evenings are especially significant for Hanuman worship. That said, sincere recitation at any time is considered valuable.
How many times should I recite the Chalisa each day?
There is no fixed rule. Some devotees recite it once daily, others 3 or 11 times on special occasions, and 108 recitations (11 rounds of chanting) is a traditional practice on Hanuman Jayanti. A single sincere recitation is considered beneficial.
What does "Chalisa" actually mean?
Chalis is the Hindi word for "forty," and Chalisa means a hymn of forty verses. The Hanuman Chalisa specifically has 40 main chaupai verses, framed by 2 opening dohas and 1 closing doha.
Who composed the Hanuman Chalisa, and when?
It was composed by Goswami Tulsidas, a 16th-century poet-saint, best known for the Ramcharitmanas (his Awadhi retelling of the Ramayana). Read more about Tulsidas and Hanuman's story on our About Hanuman page.
Can non-Hindus recite the Hanuman Chalisa?
Yes. Many people outside the Hindu tradition read or recite it for its themes of courage, discipline, and selfless service. Sincere intent and respect for the text matter more than religious affiliation.
Why is the same Hanuman Chalisa recording so popular on video?
The Gulshan Kumar / Hariharan recording embedded on this page is one of the most widely circulated audio versions of the Chalisa, often used by devotees who want to follow along by ear while reading the text.
